JAMES ROBERT CARSON
Director
James Robert Carson
began his career as a theatre director and over the past decade has
moved increasingly towards opera production.
Born and brought up in the south west of Scotland Robert studied at
Stirling University, followed by two years in San Francisco working
in experimental theatre and a year in Japan studying Noh theatre.
On his return to the UK Robert trained as a director at the Drama
Centre and directed several plays on the London Fringe, most
notably
Two Modern Noh Plays, by Yukio Mishima at
The Gate, Notting Hill.
Robert was awarded a Scottish Arts Council Bursary and was attached
to the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh where he directed
Measure For Measure,
Ghosts,
Fitting For Ladies and
A Family Affair. Since then Robert has
directed many productions across the UK for Dundee Rep, Greenwich
Theatre, Citizens Theatre and most recently
Dad's Army - The Lost Episodes (Calibre
Productions)
Shamlet (Kings Head), and
Mrs Warren's Profession (No1 tour).
He
has also produced work for many of the UK's leading
Drama Schools.
Robert's
career in opera began at Glyndebourne where he has worked on
numerous occasions, most notably reviving Nicholas Hytner’s
production of
La Clemenza Di Tito and
Albert Herring for
Sir Peter Hall. Robert's opera credits include:
Tosca (Opera
Holland Park), Madama Butterfly and
L'Elisir D'Amore (Opera
on a Shoestring),
Hugh The Drover (English
Touring Opera),
Cosi Fan Tutte (Scottish
Opera Go Round),
A Midsummer Night's Dream (Aldeburgh
Festival) and international credits include:
Carmen / Le Docteur Miracle,
The Two Widows and
Le Nozze De Figaro (DNOA
Amsterdam) and
Xerses (Greek
National Opera). Robert has also produced operas and scenes for The
Royal College, The Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish
Academy.
Robert has worked with some of the country’s leading
conductors including Sir Andrew Davis, Mark Elder, David Atherton,
Ivor Bolton, Kenneth Montgomery, Michael Rosewell, Steuart Bedford
and Philip Ellis.
Future plans include reviving his production of
Xerses for
Greek National Opera and Smetana’s
Two Widows for
DNOA in Amsterdam and
Albert Herring for
Sir Peter Hall at Glyndebourne. Theatre plans include a spring tour
of
Dad's Army - The Lost Episodes and
an autumn tour of
'Allo 'Allo for
Calibre Productions.
